How we verify

Beauty School Check is compiled from public records, not from who paid to be listed.

Sources

• TDLR license data files (daily download) — Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation cosmetology school file (Ltcosscl.csv): private, vocational/high school and junior college school licenses with address, county, phone and expiry.
• Virginia DPOR records and documents (regulant lists) — Current regulant lists from the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology: cosmetology (1205), nail (1209), waxing (1219), esthetics (1267) and barber (1303) schools, with certificate number, business name, address, certification and expiry dates. Refreshed weekly.
• Texas Occupations Code Chapter 1603 — The Texas law on barbering and cosmetology, including school licensing, student disclosures and refunds.
• Virginia Administrative Code 18VAC41 — The Board for Barbers and Cosmetology's regulations, including school requirements and minimum curriculum hours.

Texas. We download TDLR's daily cosmetology school file and keep schools whose license expiry date is on or after the day we checked and whose business address is in Texas. The license subtype tells us whether it is a private school, a vocational or high school program, or a junior college program. Texas barber schools are not listed: every barber school license in TDLR's file had expired as of October 2026.

Virginia. We download DPOR's current regulant lists for cosmetology, nail, waxing, esthetics and barber schools and drop any license with an expiry date before the day we checked (some public programs have no expiry date). Each location (same business name and address) is shown once, with every school license it holds. "First licensed" is the earliest certification date among those licenses. DPOR's files do not include phone numbers.

Schools whose names show they are community colleges, public school systems, technical centers or other government programs are labelled as public programs. Expired licenses are simply left out; we never label a named school as unlicensed. A license shows state authorization, not teaching quality or student outcomes.

Lists are alphabetical. We do not rate or rank schools. Featured schools appear in a labelled box and never change the order.

What a badge means

Licensed: the school appears in Texas TDLR's daily cosmetology school file with an expiry date on or after the day we checked, or in Virginia DPOR's current regulant list for cosmetology, nail, waxing, esthetics or barber schools. We only publish positive matches. A listing without a badge is not an accusation — most gaps are name variations between registries.

Freshness

Data was last refreshed on 2026-10-16. TDLR regenerates its license files every morning and DPOR refreshes its regulant lists weekly; we re-pull both weekly. Confirm current status with TDLR or DPOR before you enroll.
